SAM’S FISHING REPORT – 10 April 2026
FISHING REPORT – 16 March 2026
Fishing Reports thanks to MBGLAC
The outside flathead fishing is still very good with good numbers of sand flathead averaging 45 centimetres being caught in 38 to 45 metres of water between Tura Heads and Turingal Head. There are the odd bigger fish being caught pushing 60 centimetres. There are also a few gummy sharks being caught off Long Point Merimbula in 45 to 55 metres of water. The inshore water temperature is sitting around 19 to 20 degrees.
The reef fishing is coming to life again, with cooler water pushing up the coast.
Snapper and morwong fishing is picking up and some better snapper to 50 centimetres are being caught. Bait and plastics are all working well for these fish. There are also good numbers of bonito being caught on the Long Point, Haycock and Leonards Island reefs. There are also good numbers of squid being caught around the headlands and Merimbula Wharf in low light times.
The surf fishing for salmon and tailor is still very consistent. Salmon and odd tailor are being caught on most beaches as well as spinning or trolling around headlands etc. Last week, salmon school had been seen on Tura Beach, Tathra Beach down the surf club end and at the Bar at Merimbula Lake entrance. There seems to be plenty around, waiting to be caught.
The estuary fishing at the Bega River at Tathra is fishing very well with our picture showing a legal sized mulloway. Glen caught two that day, plus bream, estuary perch and dusky flathead. The entrance has re-opened after last week’s rain and it is quite wide again.
The Merimbula Lake has whiting, bream, blackfish, and trevally in the front lake and dusky flathead and trevally and plenty of undersized tailor up the top lake. There is also an odd mulloway up the top lake, but they are hard to catch. The water temperature in the estuaries is sitting around 20 degrees. Wallagoot is worth a fish at the moment. There have been catches of bream, King George whiting and reasonable numbers of dusky flathead.
The game fishing off Merimbula is still worth a trip. Saturday was a good day east of Merimbula. “The Jenks” tagged three marlin and missed a few others. Apparently, there was a very good low tide bite in the middle of the day, which most boats caught marlin if they had large baits. The BSR March Marlin competition is progressing well at the moment.
We have 14 marlin entered from the entrants so far and we are only halfway through the month. Anyone can still enter, if you are a member of the MBGLAC or join the MBGLAC. Check out details at our website at www.mbglac.com.au There are some fantastic prizes on offer, including an electric reel valued at $6999. Just by entering you can be in the draw to win this great prize.
The MBGLAC is open this week at 6pm. Come on down and enjoy a cold bevvy or two, enjoy the view from our balcony, support our weekly raffles sponsored by Goodalls Butchers, The Lakeview Hotel and the Bar Beach Kiosk. Catch up on the week’s fishing reports and meet new people.
Till next week.
